Background: Government awarded this project to CEC led consortium in 1998 on BOT basis with 35 years of concession period including construction & operation and management of entire facilities and affiliate business. The period for usages of Station development area is 50 years. Construction started in Q1 2000 and commenced operations in January 2007.

Operations: Total route length is 345 kms, serving Western corridor, representing over 95% of total population of Taiwan. Initially 8 stations operationalised which is to be increased to 12 stations. 19 trains per day per direction with 30 train sets were deployed in beginning with ramping up to 88 trains per day per direction within 1 year.

Key details: Out of 345 kms total length, viaducts & bridges are 252 kms, tunnels are 52 kms, and cut & fill are 42 kms in length. The train peak speed is 300 kms per hour, covers entire length in 80 minutes only and passes through stations viz. Taipei, Bancio, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Taichung, Chaiyi, Tainan, Zuoying. Four additional stations are Nangang, Miaoli, Changhua and Yunlin.
